part of the 3.
triennale der photographie - Archiv der Gegenwart in Hamburg we are
presenting compositions of images by this Anglo-German artist, who lives
and works in Hamburg.
Vanessa Grannum's brilliant colour photographs, which only represent a small extract of her work in progress, appear to be with the camera painted emotions. The medium of photograpy itself is merely one tool of her artistic expression, consciously abandoning any manipulations on the computer in this series
Her work reminds us of the magnificant micro and macro world of the flora and fauna on land and in the sea. But while these worlds are photographed for the appropriate media with hi-tech equipment, Vanessa Grannum uses objects from her own collection of paraphernalia, creating her very own micro and macro cosmos.
source of her artistic expression can be directly attributed to her cultural
roots. She was born in 1968, at the peak of the Swinging Sixties in the
middle of London, surrounded by the vibrating psychedelic colours and the
beat of the music of this era (her father was a drummer).Hence her background
still has an important influence on her work today, i.e., the British Popart
movement coupled with such artists as Peter Blake and the actress Vanessa
Redgrave living in the vicinity, Vanessa Grannum grew up within this tension
field of art and fashion, but also films. Therefore it is no mere coincidence
that she carries the same christian name as the great leading lady in Antonioni’s
Blow up .
Vanessa Grannum studied textile design at the Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften in Hamburg and has participated in several group shows. This is her first solo show.
