We
cordially invite you and your friends to the private view of the exhibition
I AM, paintings, drawings, objects and texts by Richard Hartwell, on Thursday
the 7th of September 2006 at 7 PM.
In his 5th one man show at Osterwalder’s Art Office, the English
artist, resident in Hamburg, constructs an installation that tells stories.
It contains a special selection of his paintings, drawings, objects and
texts from various creative periods. The exhibition’s title “I
AM” is also the title of a large adjustable relief from the “Pantomorph”
series which he began in 2000. The presentation evolves upwards, horizontally,
non chronologically and evades all accustomed hanging criteria, including
the usual gap between works. As a consequence, a field of associations
expands to ‘possesses’ the gallery and give the spectator
freedom to look as and where he will. The exhibition highlights the artist’s
60th birthday. The, not only technically talented, artist was born in
1946 in Cambridgeshire England and has lived and worked in Hamburg for
33 years.
His concept for the show grew from experiences gained with other recent
exhibitions such as: „Metaphorical Mirrors“ and „The
Elusive Lady“ 2003, „Fire“ 2004 and „Tilt Time“
2005. As in those shows, Hartwell relates personal experiences in texts
hung with the works. They directly and indirectly speak of the development
of perceptions. For example he investigates confrontations with himself
in a mirror, experiences with foreign cultures and his relationship to
the sky.
Hartwell has been known
as a painter and printmaker since the seventies. However, he has realised
his ideas in many ways: in studies for and the construction of multimedia
installations, apparatus for creating sounds and tape recordings. Apart
from this his writings deal with ways of seeing and the genesis of inclinations.

....The creation and the reception of art have to do with self-discovery.
All of us are individuals. One of the important tasks in life is to get
to know your self. Exclusively through this knowledge we gain the necessary
competence for understanding others, exchanging with them, helping them,
living and working with them... (Richard Hartwell)
Richard Hartwell studied in Cambridge, London, Vienna and Hamburg. He
made extensive journeys in Europe, the USA and Latin America, on which
he collected inspiration for his work. He was awarded bursaries and spent
working periods in Schloß Blekede Lower Saxony, Cité International
des Arts Paris, Casa Baldi Olivano Romano Italy and Schleswig- Holsteinischen
Künstlerhaus. His series of 46 one man shows to date began in Berlin
1970 and with “Newspaper” at the Hamburger Kunsthalle in 1973.
Since then his work has been represented in numerous exhibitions, for
example through out Germany, in London, Zurich, Amsterdam, Barcelona,
Philadelphia and Los Angeles. They have also been purchased for public
collections such as the Victoria and Albert Museum London and the Van-Gogh-Museum
Amsterdam.
He has lived and worked for 3 years at the Künstlerhaus Hamburg-Bergedorf
and will be present at the opening. We would be delighted to greet you
at our gallery..
